SCLEROTHERAPY

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. This treatment is purely cosmetic and is primarily performed to help reduce the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins but can also help improve related symptoms like aching, swelling and burning.

WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy is a medical cosmetic procedure performed to effectively treat varicose veins and spider veins. To achieve the desired cosmetic results, Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a salt solution directly into the vein.

Once injected, the solution then irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and stick together, ultimately blocking the blood to clot. The vein will then turn into scar tissue that disappears.

THE PROCEDURE

The procedure is typically performed by a doctor or professional in an office setting. No anesthesia is required to perform the procedure and it is typically completed in under an hour.

  • The entire procedure is performed in 15-30 minutes depending on the number and size of veins treated.
  • Mild discomfort may be felt while the solution is being injected but typically does not last longer than a minute or two.
  • A compression pad is applied once the solution is inserted and the needle is drawn to help keep blood out of the injected vein.

IS THERE DOWNTIME?

Following the procedure you will be able to walk around almost immediately. To prevent blood clot formation, walking and moving your legs will be very important.

You may be asked to wear compression stockings for the first few weeks following treatment to assure the treated veins remain compressed and tight.

WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy may not be a option for everyone. You may not qualify for the procedure if you are:

  • Pregnant
  • Have had a baby within the last 3 months
  • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Are immobile or can not get out of bed without assistance
  • Have large varicose veins
  • Have a blood clot or history of blood clots

ARE THERE ANY EFFECTS?

Side effects may include the following at the site of the injection:

  • Bruising
  • Raised red areas
  • Small skin sores
  • Darkened skin in the form of lines or spots
  • Multiple tiny red blood vessels

Typically, side effects fade within a few days of the procedure. For ongoing side effects or severe inflammation, air bubbles or blood clots, consult with your doctor immediately.
